When I was in grade 8, my friends and I watched a movie called Project X. We all got hyped after the movie and decided to throw a party. We booked a hotel room, created a Facebook event and just like that we hosted a party. Over 100 people from different school came and we made over $1250 USD in one night. That party was one of the most memorable thing I did as a teenager and if I can do it, you can as well. Here is a simple guideline that you can following to ensure your party is a success.
Step 1. Location
Finding a location is the hardest thing. You have to have the perfect venue in-order for a successful party. Some venues are really nice but too expensive, some are just too far away, and some are already booked. Just keep finding and eventually you’ll find a good one. Here are some party location ideas.
-Abandoned houses / area
Tip* If you don’t have money to rent the venue, what you can do is to split the profits with the venue. 2. Find the local business through your local Yellow Pages website.
Step 2. Create
After you got the location, you will have to create some tickets, menus and posters.
You can use Canva a free software to create some really nice posters and tickets. Create a Facebook event to promote your party as well. It’s free and it’s a very good way to create buzz around your event. If instagram and twitter is your thing as well you can utilize those social media to promote your event as well.
TIP* To save money I printed the tickets in the school library.
Step 3. Promote
After you created your posters it’s time to put them up. Some great places to put up some poster are:
-Near local malls
-Near where your party would be hosted
Tip* Highly encourage you to watch the movie Project x to have a better idea on how to throw a party.
Step 4. Partnerships
Another great free way to get more people to promote your event is through partnerships. You can form partnerships with students from other schools to help you sell tickets. Form a deal with them. Give them an X amount of percentages around (10~25%) for each ticket they can sell. This is a win win situation, you can get more tickets sold and they can make a little bit of money from it.
TIP* You can use this commission reward system to encourage more sales
1-10 ticket sold 5% commission
10-20 ticket sold 10% commission
20-30 ticket sold 15% commission
and so on…..
Step 4. Sell
Another good way to sell more tickets apart from partnership is early bird discounts. By offering early bird discounts you can ensure that there are already people coming to your event, this way you don’t have to solely rely on at door purchases. You can also extrapolate how many people will be coming from the early bird tickets sales which will help you estimate how many drinks you should buy. You can sell your early bird tickets by just walking up to people and promoting it to them. It worked so many times, but it takes a little bit of courage. Here are some good selling location ideas.
-Teenager concentrated malls
Step 5. Purchase
If you are hosting your party at a venue that doesn’t provide any supplies and equipment use this check-list and a simple guideline for the things you should buy.
-Shaker (if you are serving special drinks)
-Ice (if you are serving special drinks)
-Speakers (Try borrowing a from a friend instead of buying one, if do buy one I suggest this one)
-Ropes (read security section)
-Stamps (read security section)
Tip* Try to borrow as much as the stuff as you could
Step 6.Drinks menu
It’s time to organize your drinks menu. Here are some of the most popular drink people buy in a party.
-Beer (sell can beer instead of glass bottles)
Tip* If you are targeting teens I would suggest to make the drinks cheaper. They would be more likely to purchase more, get drunk and buy even more. You can also do “Happy mins” – 50% discount for a small period of time. Set the prices according to your local bars and make it around 30-40% cheaper.
Step 7. Security
The last thing you want when you are hosting a party is someone trashing it. So make sure you spend a lot of time thinking about the security procedure. Here are the things you should do to ensure profits and safety.
-Check bags (You should check everyone’s bag before they come into your venue. They might bring in drinks which would decrease your drink sales but more importantly they might bring a weapon or something. So make sure you do this.)
-Rope or stamp (When a person hands us their tickets at the door, here is what we do. The guest hands us their tickets, we take it and either stamp their hands or tie a ribbon band round their wrist to show that they have entered the party through the front door. This ensure that no one sneaks in to the party and if they re-enter the party we know they have previously gave us the ticket already)
-Don’t lie your things around (If you are hosting a party at your house, make sure everything valuable is hidden safety. Even your drinks, I have experience someone stealing drinks from us. So make sure you have everything hidden.)
How to make extra money:
There are various ways to make extra money from the party goers. Here are the things and services you can provide to make that extra buck.
-Food ( You can sell chips, candy, gum …etc)
-Theme (If you created them for example ; glow in the dark. You can sell glow sticks, give face paints, glow stickers to make more money)
-Bags (You can provide bag storage for people and charge them $2-7 bucks as storage fee)
Go out there and have a blast.
But make sure you don’t get the party TOO crazy like project-x. Be responsible. One good rule to remember is that the host should never get too drunk. I hope this post helped, I’m honored to be a guest post at this blog.
